26 across: Hearing about a king staying longer than intended (8)

This is from an easy cryptic crossword. I can’t quite work out exactly how it fits – I think it might be ‘hearing’=’trying’, ‘king’=’a r’, ‘staying longer than intended’ is the clue – but the answer is ‘tarrying’. What a great word! Such a shame that we don’t use it so much these days.

Tarry v. to linger; to loiter; to delay; to stay behind; to sojourn; to wait.

I remember it from Shakespeare quite a lot, such as “nay, leave not good sir, tarry with me a while”.
