Watching Barack Obama give good speech again yesterday in Dublin made me wonder more about the writer behind it.

The White House Director of Speechwriting is Jon Favreau (not the actor), who worked on Obama’s presidential campaign too; he’ll be 30 in a couple of weeks. But this video from the White House website shows that writing the speeches is actually a collaborative effort, with drafts going back and forth between president and staff.

They are masterpieces of oration and a different skill to writing an essay or article. I find the process fascinating and wonder how Favreau gets started. Although it was largely complimentary fluff designed to make everyone feel good, there was certainly a lot of research behind yesterday’s Ireland speech.
