It’s interesting to see how promotional material has changed over the years, and also how some things are still the same. Here’s a playbill poster for a variety show at Leeds Hippodrome in 1913.

The tagline ‘Where everybody goes’ wouldn’t be out of place today. I like the simple graphic style, and also the descriptions of the performers. It’s quite a skill to describe someone’s act in six words and make it appealing: ‘Du Gros Trio – The Novel and Entertaining Comedy Gymnasts’. Lovely. I wonder what ‘Mabel’s Lovers, Shown on the Bioscope’ do.

This poster also shows how text conventions have changed…there was much more use of capitalisation and punctuation back in the day, it seems!
