In 1959 the University of Sheffield opened its new library at Western Bank. Last night, we had a look around the refurbished building and an exhibition of its history.

When I was a student, I loathed going to this library – it was dark and old fashioned. The stacks where the journals were held were spooky and too hot.

But now I appreciate the building’s fantastic architecture and attention to detail. And the original Terence Conran chairs are still in the reading room, and in remarkably good nick considering their age!
